Manchester City Vs Bournemouth – Pre-Match Thoughts

Bournemouth vs Manchester City: FA Cup quarterfinal preview as title holders visit Vitality Stadium City are still smarting from Bournemouth’s first-ever league win over them at the half-way point of the league table, but can the Cherries pull off another upset to end their cup dreams? Pep Guardiola’s side is chasing another deep FA Cup run so Bournemouth will need to be close to perfect to pull off an upset.

Bournemouth Preview

Andoni Iraola Bournemouth Headcoach

Bournemouth has been one of the surprises of the season, finding form in fits and starts under its manager, Andoni Iraola. That included a jaw-dropping run of 12 unbeaten games in all competitions from November to January. But their momentum has faltered in recent weeks, with four losses over their last eight games, capped by a maddening 2-1 loss to Brentford before the international break.

The FA Cup, however, has told a different story. Bournemouth have passed West Brom (5-1), Everton (2-0) and Wolves (through a thrilling penalty shoot-out) to make it to this point. But there are defensive issues, with Milos Kerkez and Dean Huijsen both unavailable for this key clash. That leaves Iraola another week with his makeshift back line, which could leave Bournemouth to face the brunt of City’s unerring scoring ability.

Bournemouth predicted lineup (3-4-1-2): Kepa; Cook, Hill, Zabarnyi, Soler; Christie, Adams; Semenyo, Kluivert, Tavernier, Evanilson

Man City Preview

Manchester City have been here before in the FA Cup, with this being the sixth successive season in which they have reached the semi-finals. But their league form has waned somewhat, with a surprise 1-0 loss to Nottingham Forest and a 2-2 draw with Brighton stealing the headlines.

Erling-Haaland-Man-City

Even so, Guardiola’s team is still one of the world’s most fearsome. They steamrolled past Plymouth in the last round, 3-1, and the teenager Nico O’Reilly was a force of nature. Injuries have not helped, with Rodri and John Stones Nathan Ake and Manuel Akanji all missing. But the real boost comes from goalkeeper Ederson returning and Erling Haaland, who leads the line once again after more than 100 goal involvements in just 94 Premier League appearances.

Man City XI vs Trabzonspor: Ederson; Lewis, Khusanov, Dias, Gvardiol; Gonzalez, Gundogan; Savinho, Marmoush, Doku; Haaland

Key Stats to Watch

  • Bournemouth have won just four of their eight outings in all competitions.

  • Yet another FA Cup semi-final, the 6th in a row for Man City.

  • Erling Haaland has hit 100 goal involvements in 94 Premier League games.

  • When the clubs met earlier in the campaign, Bournemouth’s 2-1 win was the first time it had ever beaten the Sky Blues.

Player Props to Consider

Erling Haaland Over 1.5 Goals @ -110 (BetMGM) — This could be a sucker bet but given how well Haaland leads the line and the injuries on the Bournemouth back line, this is a good bet here.

Phil Foden: Record Over 0.5 Assists @ +120 (DraftKings) — Foden’s been a creative dynamo for City, so he could bag an assist on a potential winning goal.

Final Prediction

Bournemouth have demonstrated already that they can upset City’s rhythm, but the FA Cup is a different kind of obstacle. It is difficult to see Guardiola’s men slipping up with Haaland firing on all cylinders and loaded in this loaded experience at this level. It ought to be a close one, but we’re leaning toward a Manchester City win and over 2.5 goals.
