Dallas Mavericks guard Kyrie Irving is out for the season after tearing the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in his left knee in Monday night’s 122-98 loss to the Sacramento Kings.

The nine-time NBA All-Star suffered the injury during the first quarter while landing awkwardly after a drive to the basket. This was despite the pain he was in, he was taken back for a few seconds to sink two free throws but left the game.
The 32-year-old has been a lynchpin of Dallas’ run, having appeared in 50 of their 62 games and averaging 24.7 points, 4.8 rebounds and 4.6 assists. His absence is a big blow to a Mavericks team that has been dealing with injuries.
Joel Embiid, who was traded to the Lakers in February, has managed only a game so far because of a groin ailment, with Dereck Lively II, Daniel Gafford and Caleb Martin also to be watched.

In a message on X, the Mavericks expressed Irving’s importance and resilience: “Kai, you are resilient. You are excellence and leadership and dedication. We know you will return stronger than ever.”
Irving’s injury is the third major NBA blow in recent weeks. Rookie Victor Wembanyama of the San Antonio Spurs has been diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in his right shoulder, and Philadelphia 76ers star Joel Embiid is out for the season with a knee injury.
Dallas currently sits 10th in the Western Conference and would be facing an uphill battle to get into the playoffs without their star guard.
Reserve guard Jaden Hardy also sprained his right ankle during Monday’s game, leaving the Mavericks with even less depth. With several of its key players missing, Dallas’ playoff hopes are now in the balance.
